Superbowl....SuperAds?

This year's game was mediocre at the best so many people were counting on relying on classic superbowl style commercials to keep them entertained.  It is actually no secret that many viewers of the Superbowl are more excited for the commercials than the actual game!  Many go as far as to DVR the event and fast forward the game!  The first link below is a slideshow of many of this year's most buzzed about commercials.  Which was your favorite?  What appealed to you?  How did the marketing department use advancements in technology to enhance this ad or campaign?

Here is one websites list of the best and the worst ads from 2014.  Do you agree with their selections?  Is one of you favorites missing from the "Best of" list?  How does the marketing done during this event effect the game?  How does it affect the consumers?  Is there anything that you suddenly want or crave during these commercials?  How has technology changed the marketing plan of these businesses?

  1. My favorite commercial this year would have to be the Volkswagon Wings commercial, I thought it was a clever commercial without being over-the-top or being full of cliche humor. What I noticed with this years ads are that there were a lot more for modern technology, such as website hosting for Squarespace and GoDaddy. I am always working on Superbowl Sundays (being in retail), and never actually go back to watch the game, typically waiting to see the best of lists or get recommendations on what commercials were worth going back and watching, so personally I don't get affected by the commercials, but overall I can't say that I've ever seen commercials immediately or directly affect family members who were watching the game, I've never seen anyone suddenly crave or want something they saw in a commercial. I don't have any memorable commercials from last year, because much like this year, I probably only saw them online, and didn't have any reason to remember them.

    2. Same situation here, I'm always working on sundays so I don't pay attention to the game.

  2. My favorite commercial is the Budweiser one with the puppy and Clydesdale horse. It was so genuine and targeted all audiences from young kids to senior citizens, even though it is an alcohol selling company. I did not agree completely with the best and worst lists for Super Bowl commercials. I think the #5 NSA commercial should have been on the worst list, it was kind of creepy. Then I think the #3 Chevy commercial should have been on the best, it was funny to me. I also saw nothing wrong with the Bud Light Cool Twist commercial. It wasn't very entertaining, but it also wasn't one of the worse ads. Thinking back on last years ads, I can't think of any of the ones that were shown, none come to mind. Maybe that is how much I really pay attention, or nobody really cares about the ads after the buzz of the Super Bowl fades away. People can talk about the commercial for a few days after, but then eventually we start to forget about them.

  4. The Budweiser commercial is by far my favorite of this year. Audi's Doberhauhau is a great example of technology being used in commercials. The ability to use CGI to create realistic images. I was disappointed in GoDaddy's commercial, but in the long run it was a good idea to get away from the bikinis and supermodels.
Technology has vastly changed the marketing plan of not just the businesses involved with the Superbowl adds, but all businesses. The ability to create vividly realistic graphics can take a marketing teams imagination and make it real. They use computers to smooth out images and text. I highly doubt any commercial is edited without the use of a computer anymore.
The only commercial i remember from the 2013 Superbowl is GoDaddys. They had Bar Raphaeli make out with the nerdy guy.
I usually don't pay attention to the commercials so I don't really have an opinion on whether or not last years commercials were better than this years, or if next years will be better than this years.

    1. I agree that GoDaddy made a smart decision with this year's commercial choice.. though it won't be as widely talked about as last year's I think it will be good for their image. Also, loved both Budweiser ones!

    2. I like Audi Doberhauhau ad, it was pretty funny and it does have a great example of technology.

  5. First off, I would like to forget this years super bowl not because of the commercials but because I am a die-hard Broncos fan. Yes, we got SMOKED. With that being said, one commercial that I really enjoyed was the Tim Tebow Turbo Tax commercial. I thought it was really funny because he basically was making fun of himself for not having a pro football contract and it showed a bunch of ridiculous things that he "accomplished" in this year.
Technology is huge in marketing today. A prime example of this is the Doberman Chihuahua mix commercial.
I agree Paul on the post prior to mine. the only commercial I remember from last year is the nerdy guy making out with the supermodel. I was on vacation in Hawaii last year and my Broncos weren't playing so I didn't pay as close to the Super Bowl as I did this year. I also don't ever remembering seeing something on a commercial and instantly craving it.
In my opinion most of the commercials now aren't that funny at all. It doesn't matter what year, there are some pretty dumb ones and a few funny ones.

  6. My favorite commercial of this years Super Bowl was the Clydesdale with the puppy one. I think it really touched America with the look and meaning of the commercial. I did not watch the Super Bowl or the commercials because I was at work, but I saw this commercial on Facebook. It was one of the best ones I have ever seen. I do not recall any of the commercials last year. I only paid attention to the game. Weird I know.

    1. I am proud that you watched only the game. You must have been rooting for one of the teams last year and didn't want any distractions. But I liked the Clydesdale commercial as well, very cute and touching.

  7. I am one of those people that watch the Super Bowl for the commercials especially if my team is not playing!! This year was one of those years! My favorite commercial was by far Budweiser. I think one of the most technology based ones was Microsoft. It went through how much technology has changed and what it does for people in the everyday life. I think that technology has a great impact on advertising for businesses. I don't really remember the commercials from 2013 so I can't compare which was better.

  8. My favorite commercial had to be the Budweiser, Puppy Love, one. No real reason as to why though. I think the CG effects in the Doberhuahua commercial were pretty great and a good example of technology being used for marketing. I've never actually watched the Super Bowl, for commercials or otherwise, so I haven't seen any of the commercials from 2013. I guess I'm pretty indifferent on the matter.

    1. I also liked the effects of that CG commercial. But, I'd have to agree with you on the Budweiser! Too bad the game couldn't be better!!

  9. I think my favorite commercial's would have to be the Bud light one with Ian due to it being so ridiculous and random, the Budweiser one with the returning soldier because I believe it had a great message, and lastly the Doritos time machine because it was just I think simple yet good.
I think technology has been used to enhance the realistic factor in every commercial and to make each commercial more vivant and smooth.
You know I don't think there was any commercial that made me want to run out and buy it except maybe the Maserati one but who doesn't want a Maserati.
I think tech. has made the advertisement business expand due to being able to get more creative.

The only one I can think of from last years was the nerdy guy getting some action from that super model.
I agree I doubt i will remember any of this years commercials, I think the only thing I will remember is how bad it was, I truly thought it was going to be a good game and was quiet disappointed.

    1. First off, you WOULD like a commercial just because it has a Maserati in it. And yeah I definitely agree with the Budweiser soldier commercial. I think it had a great message and I'm sure it touched a lot of people. It was kindof nice to see so many commercials with positive messages this year. Definitely a change.

    2. In Joe's defense I wanted the Maserati too, and I also was pretty disappointed in the game.

  10. One of my favorite commercials was the Dannon Oikos greek yogurt commercial. The fact that John Stamos was in it was great but what really made it funny was when two more of his Full House cast mates joined the scene. I also loved the Budweiser commercial with the puppy that kept coming back for his best friend the horse. It was really sweet and definitely pulled at my heartstrings. I liked Microsoft's empowering ad, but the electronic voice narration was a little eerie and I don't think it deserved the #2 spot of best superbowl commercials. I thought it was interesting that some of the commercials this year were purposely leaked early. Maybe they thought it would create more interest and anticipation for the Super Bowl commercials, but personally I wasn't as excited to see commercials again that I had already seen online and it made the whole experience less exciting than it usually is.
I think technology has allowed these ads to become better quality and more life like, also allowing designers to become more creative with their commercials.
Looking back on last years ads, the only one I remembered was Ram's God Made a Farmer commercial because it was unique and there was a big buzz about it when it aired. Some of this years' ads were entertaining but nothing special, I doubt I will remember any of them next Super Bowl.

    2. Totally agree with the oikos one! It was like a full house reunion :)
I also liked the use of technology. Most of the commercials used it in the most practical way.

    3. Agree about the leaked early advertisements, kind of ruined the whole surprise look what crazy idea we came up with whole ordeal.

  11. I don't really watch the Superbowl but i must say just looking through these commercials i thought a lot of them were funny and cute. one of the ones i really liked was the cheerios one, i thought it was cute how they put family into it and i think it made it really sentimental and i think the jingle is what gets everyone. Looking through these commercials you can definitely tell how technology has changed with animations through the years like the Audi commercial and the dog.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree Alice, technology is improving in many ways. The Audi commercial was really funny but I think that poor dog wouldn't be able to keep hip head up in real life. And the Cheerios commercial was the only one that really included the family in a typical way in my opinion.

  12. I really liked the turbo tax commercial. I thought it was very simple, yet clever. I like the commercials that don't always have to use sexual references or cute animals to get their point across. Don't get get me wrong though, I loved the Budweiser commercial too :). I didn't completely agree with the list of worst commercials either. I thought some were definitely not as good as others, but many on the list I wouldn't have labeled as worst.

    1. You're right with the fact that many commercial focus more towards either being cute, or being greatly sexualized in their attempts at grabbing attention.

    2. You have a point. Many of the commercials seem to use cuteness or sexuality to sell their products. In the past, I used to enjoy the ones that focused more on using comedy to sell their products.

  13. My favorite was the NSA ad because it was hilarious and relatable. The NSA is a fairly technology based subject.
I agree with the selections for the best and worst ads. None of my favorites are missing from the list. The marketing usually keeps the mood upbeat during the game. The consumers are also more susceptible to the ads. I would say I definitely wanted to drive a Maserati during the Maserati commercial. Most of the Best ads are technology related companies. Last years superbowl I remember the Burger King ad and the Go Daddy ad. I think last years commercials were also better along the actual game.

  14. My favorite commercials of the year were either the commercial with the dog and horse in the Budweiser commercial or the coca cola commercial of America the beautiful with all the different languages. First off, no one could possibly hate the Budweiser commercial. Overall it was one that almost everyone would like. I liked the coca cola commercial because it depicted America so well in the commercial. America is one big melting pot of a lot of different people. Now that we are moving into a new accepting age of people that it was only fitting that we had a commercial with all the different people that America holds in it. People have apart of both what their original culture is and they're also American as well, which I thought this commercial did a very good job of showing during the most watched televised event every year. I thought that these two commercials really interested me because neither of them were funny. Usually I'll get a good laugh out of a couple commercials and I'll find one of them the best. But this year I didn't find much to laugh about. IF I were to compare the marketing between this year and last year I would say that last year was much better. Even though this years commercials probably were at more of a disadvantage because the game was such a blowout that everyone lost interest by the half and possibly turned the game off. Hope everyone enjoyed their super bowl sunday!

  15. OK everyone, here is the shocker. I DON'T WATCH SUPERBOWL!!!! I just never really got that into it. I didn't even know it was last weekend. So I don't have any commercials that I remember from last year, or this year. I did however watch the commercials that were posted and none of them where to my liking other than the how the babies are made and the Budweiser horse and dog commercial.
Watching some of these commercials made me want beer and Doritos. even as we speak I am eating cheese nips thanks to the goat for sale commercial. I mainly go to Superbowl parties for the free food. Maybe if someone I knew was actually playing i would watch but Netflix was my only entertainment this Superbowl Sunday.
I will however say that it is really amazing the things they come up with for commercials and all the tech that they have now to make it possible. I can for sure tell you that those babies and pandas in the rocket ships were green screened and digitally edited. I mean a baby in a parachute??? Not in this life time people.

  16. I think the Budweiser commercial was the best. The puppy was really cute. All tv commercials these days, especially Super Bowl commercials are filmed in HD, something that wasn't possible in the not so distant past. I guess I agree with the best and worse list, cant contradict it. I was just thinking the other day that the only reason there is still a Super Bowl is to sell newspapers, magazines, air time, and NFL gear. Its just a bunch of corporate manipulation of the people. It affects consumers by brainwashing them into buying things they don't need to feel "happy". I didn't see any of the ads from last year because I don't partake in Super Bowl fever... I don't think anybody will remember the commercials from this year in two weeks, let alone a year from now. It was all just a waste of money, corporations passing their wealth from corporation to corporation. And talking people into giving them some of the little money we have left.

  17. I like the Budweiser, Honda: hugfest, and Toyota: The Muppets advertisement but my favorite is Terry Crew’s Toyota commercial with the Muppets. I like the singing and Terry Crew’s reaction when he said “they are singing vegetables,” it’s just so funny. It had no technology advancements except for the Toyota vehicle.
I totally disagree with Coco-cola being the #4 best ad, it didn’t make sense to me. How would people understand what they are saying if it’s in different languages. It would have been better if whatever they were saying was in English. I don’t mean to offend those people who drink Bud light beer but I agree with it being one of the worst commercial. It was just boring, there should have been few people drinking and socializing to make it more entertaining.
These commercials doesn't affect the game, it could only make the consumers buy more or less of their product. After watching these commercials, it makes me want a car especially Jaguar. Technology presents marvelous benefits to businesses. The use of social media has greatly improved marketing, today millions of potential buyers can be reached through online communities, internet etc.
I didn't watch Superbowl last year but I think commercials are all the same, ads are ads; they all have the same purpose, which is to advertise their product.

  18. My favorite commercial during the Super bowl this year was the Microsoft one. This commercial just showed how much Microsoft is reaching out to people and that was really stuck out to me. With all the commercials this year I think that the Microsoft commercial showed the advancement in technology just by showing all the new things they are creating. They are making people who were not able to enjoy their lives or be happy start to become just that, happy and living their lives.
I would have to agree with the lists for the top commercials and the worst commercials. After watching the commercials all I wanted was to have a new puppy! With creating these commercials it just shows the advancement with technology such as the Audi commercial with the dogs!
I do not really remember any of the ads from last Super Bowl. Really the only thing I got from the ads this year was disappointment! I did not find the ads this year very enjoyable like they usually are. This years ads are differently going to be the ones that no one will remember.

  19. My favorite Super Bowl commercial would have to be the Budweiser one with the puppy and the horse. It targeted a lot of different ages from children to adults at any age, and I love dogs and horses! It was a very touching commercial and I like the way the portrayed the puppy not wanting to ever be away from the horse, as they portray people who drink Budweiser and not ever wanting to switch drinks.

When it comes to the list of best commercials, I think that they focused more on what commercials were appealing or new and different rather then the way the product was advertised in the actual commercial. I think they are missing some of the best and funniest commercials that they had out there. Like I said, I believe that they focused more on the meaning behind the commercial, then focusing on getting everyone's attention towards the product.

The marketing doesn't really effect the game itself, but it does effect the statistics of the amount of people that watch the super bowl whether it is actually for the game or just for the commercials.

There were a lot of things that I wished I had while watching these commercials such as; a puppy in my lap while riding a horse and then to jump in my Jaguar and return home to an ice cold beer and a bag of Doritos.

Some commercials that come in mind are the commercials that didn't even make it because they were too inappropriate. I don't really remember any of the commercials from last year to be honest. I don't believe that a lot of people actually remember the commercials for a long amount of time. I think that once the talk about the Super Bowl dries out, so does the talk about the commercials.

  20. My favorite Superbowl commercial in 2014 is Hugfest from Honda. There are many reasons why I really like this commercial. Frist of all I like Bruce Willis; he is the best action actor in America. I have most of his movies in my collection. Second of all I like Fred Armisen; I like to see his shows on TV, especially on Saturday Night Live show. Armisen is a funny guy. Hugfest commercial has two of my favorite people, which makes me want to watch the commercial over and over again. I think Honda was trying to give a meaning message through this commercial that huge is another way to show your love to other. Honda wants to let us know that safety is very important to everybody (you and your love one), and Honda is a safe car.
The website superbowl-commercial.org listed the best commercial of 2014 is “Make Love, Not War” from AXE. I do agree with their selection because the commercial gives the message that easy to understand. I still like my favorite Superbowl commercial, Hugfest from Honda more than “Make Love, Not War” from AXE. I prefer to watch a simple commercial. I like commercials that give message to the audio other than funny commercials. I would love to see more good commercials on TV throughout the year, not just only the Superbowl season. Many businesses had done a great job of doing commercial during the Superbowl season, and I hope that they will continue to do it and make it better every year.
My favorite Superbowl commercial in 2013 is Soul from Mercedes. All I can think about this commercial is “Don’t stop dreaming, and make your dreams come true on your own”. I think the commercial want to show the audio that Mercedes is affordable car. If one of your dreams is to own a Mercedes car, now is your time. I think that many Superbowl commercials in 2013 are much better that Superbowl commercials in 2014. I hope that in the next year, 2015, all Superbowl commercials will be better than ever.

  21. My favorite commercial was the Volkswagen and a commercial because it seem very interesting one amazing thing that really appeal to me that you can get 100,000 miles on a car and for me I think that's pretty good kind of car to have. They did a really good job by making the men have wings saying that every time one of them gets 100,000 miles on a car they get wings and the also what made it really awesome was that the men really didant want the wings it was forced by a man and his daughter.
Yeah il say that most of these videos are in the top 10 but I really don't have a favorite commercial to me a emotionally something blocking me from watching my TV show movie or NBA game. I think that hard-core fans get really mad with commercial comes on because they're really focus and watching the football game especially if their team is losing and And they want to see what happens next. Technology can really change a business because you can animated whatever you want and change what you want to design something that your consumers will like an enjoy.
I think that Last years commercials aren't as good as This years commercials because I really don't remember them commercial all that well so I would have to go with this year only becouse I know most of them.

  22. my favorite commercial had to of been with the litter of puppies and the one always was playing with the horse, well one day the dog was sold off but the horse ran after him and made sure he stayed on the farm because they became such great friends. that commercial ended up being a beer commercial.
I did feel a strong bond to it because everyone has a friend that you don't want to lose, another aspect was that it was an animal., People love animals, that made it the most appealing to me.
as for me I much rather watch the game and not watch the commercials, commercials are fillers, like the lettuce and onion in the burger. I want the meat a.k.a the actual game. so no I do not fast forward just to watch the commercials

My favorite commercial had to be the detergant one when the man had on the 49ers jersey spelled ketchup on it and showed joe montana face and every 49er fan the it was miracle for them to win the superbowl and then his wife took the jersey out of the frame and washed it, and she was a ravens fan so i liked the concept of the commercial.
I really had a strong bond with the commercial because im from california and 49ers is one of my favorite teams too and anyone else who is a fan of both teams should've loved this one prolly my fav commercial in a while.
I know most people like watch superbowl for the commercial but me personally as well as some of my fellow piers enjoy watching the actual game but everyone is entitle to there own opinion. 25. My favorite Super Bowl commercial was the Budweiser one with the cute dog. I think there was some technology used unless the horses were very well trained. I think the commercial caught the eye of many people and that is good marketing. As for the best commercials, the NSA one was funny but kind of creepy. I didn't remember any of the commercials from last year until I watched the video. It's crazy to think how much money is put into a commercial just for the Super Bowl and I'm not surprised that people record it just for the commercials.

  26. Truly, I don't think I can choose a favorite commercial because I was kind of disappointed with this years commercials. I've never been a big fan of watching sports, but I would usually join in the Super Bowl because it was entertaining to sit around with the family to watch weird commercials that they would come up with just for the event. However, this year they did not seem as entertaining as they had in previous years.

  27. My favorite commercial and the best one from this year was by far the Budweiser commercial. That one really caught my eye and made me tear up so much every time I watched it. It must be the mixture of the song with the story that is being played out that really makes me emotional. The puppy was so cute and then I love horses and dogs so much that this was perfect combination.
I think that this year was not very enticing as other years have been. They could have been better in my opinion.
I never can remember commercials from past years. I think that the only notable commercials I watch and halfway remember are the ones that come on around Christmas time each year. I very rarely watch the super bowl so these are not easily remembered.
