The Olympic Games - Much more than just an athletic competition!

The Olympic games are a world wide event that is full of fun and excitement from start to finish.  The planning that goes into these events is second to none.  The athletes and sporting events are typically the main focus of the games, as they should be, but there are many other factors that contribute to making the Olympics a success.  A major one of these factors is technology.  Please find at least two articles relating to technology used at the Olympic games in Sochi.  Be creative!  The write a brief summary of how this technology was used at the games, how it effected the events, and what could  be done to make things better in the future.

Technology at the Olympics isn't just for viewers and broadcasters, athletes and coaches are using technology to their advantage. According to Yahoo Sports, Patrick Deneen and his coaching staff use the technology for Patrick's moguls freestyle skiing competition. "We shoot multiple angles of every jump he does and it has changed the way we coach," said Pat Deneen, Patrick's father and coach. "We hit 'analyze' and it breaks it down, frame by frame, in high resolution. We make our notes, and send it on up the hill." These enhancements are helping all athlete in many sports, not jut when it comes to the Olympics and it is just the beginning

    1. It's crazy that technology has improved to the point where we can break down a jump like that and analyze each aspect of it. I'm sure it really helps athletes pinpoint exactly what they need to work on in order to perfect their jump.

  2. Though technology has advanced both the viewing capabilities and actual camera views of what we can see of the Olympics, one often overlooked technology that had revolutionized the Olympics is the advancement of tools. Skiers and Skaters alike have new skis and blades that allow them to more efficiently glide across the ice, and snow. Currently, this puts the advantage in the ring of the teams with the most modern, advanced gear. In the future I see gear becoming highly efficient and possibly standardized, so that the sports are no longer a test of a countries technology but a a test of an athletes pure skills. I think that that is the direction will take the Olympics and many other sports.

    1. I agree that new technology has greatly changed the Olympics and has been a big benefit to the countries that have the access to the most cutting edge technology. I would like to see equipment becoming somewhat standardized so that athletes are winning only because they are skilled, not simply because they have the best technology out there.

  3. From keeping courses covered in snow during 60 degree temperatures to improved equipment for athletes, there was a lot of advanced new technology that played a part in the Sochi Olympics this year. With the warm temperatures at Sochi, a big concern this year was keeping snow on the courses and preventing it from melting. There was 16 million cubic feet of snow that was kept stored under blankets and added to the hills when needed, they also added chemicals to the courses that melted and hardened the top layer of snow in order to prevent ruts forming and made the course fair for all athletes.
Another advancement of technology at Sochi was the speed skating outfits for the U.S. Team. Under Armour created these speed skating suits dubbed "Mach 39" that, similar to a golf ball, had little dimples in them that reduced air drag and decreased friction in the thighs, which reduced wasted energy and allowed skaters to shave milliseconds off their time. Every year there seem to be new improvements in the clothing and equipment that athletes use. I think that we will continue to see major improvements in these areas allowing for athletes to become faster and achieve even higher scores in the future.

This article shows how they made a giant polar bear put out the flame at closing ceremonies. The lighting they had was set to show the colors of the spectators. This was for the closing ceremonies and used to make a huge impact to close the Olympic games. This will have a huge impact for future Olympics or just events with all of the colors of the flags of the competitors.

This showed that they made it for the graphics on items showing the events more visible and more clear. The effects of the graphics showed the movements of the athletes to help the viewers get more into it. This technology will help during sporting events. Showing the athletes almost as if you were on the field with them to help you see them a lot more clear.

This article gives 7 examples of the functioning of technology in the Olympics. I think that it is amazing that they used technology to keep snow constantly on the ground for those events. Every year or even every month athletic wear changes and improves to help the athletes perform to the best of their abilities. The fact that they made hockey socks that can't be cut also shows that they are looking out for the safety of their athletes also. Everything that went through the opening and closing ceremonies is a great example of new technology that went into the Olympics.

This article talks a lot about how the technology has influenced the security of the Sochi Olympics. I think it is great that technology hasn't only been noticed for improving the athletes performance, or letting everyone around the world watch the same things, but to keep the athletes, coaches, viewers, etc. safe.

I think it is easy to take it for granted that the snow will be there, despite the fact that the weather can be unpredictable at times. I'm sure this could be a great problem, but it's cool to see what people make of these sort of issues.

in this article they talk about the under armour speed skating suits it says that instead of trying to make them very aerodynamic they kind of went the opposite direction. They made it kind of like a golf ball with strategically placed dimples all over the suite. “We’re trying to disrupt that air flow before it bulks up behind a skater,” Chief of Innovation Kevin Haley said. I think that every day companies are looking for ways to make athletes faster. It effects the event of speed skating by cutting down seconds of of their time.

It talked about Under Armour's new Mach 39 speed skating suit that uses bubbles like the ones on golf balls to help reduce air resistance behind the skaters. It cuts off time from their runs and that can be the difference between getting the gold and not even getting a medal.

They said that it is lighter, tougher, and more maneuverable than the previous bobsleds. It mentioned that they ran 100s of trials to get the overall design right for the sled. This technology is cool because it may put you on the podium or send you home with 4th place. I believe it will continue to grow, as by the next Olympics something better will be released.

Today's Olympics aren't just about the entertainment and physical competition. Every one is involved to win. It might not be for gold. Now it is highest ratings and which producers movies they watch. whose photos they will use in broadcasting and how many? it's all about competition, this is their biggest event to show off.

One of the biggest things for technology in the Olympics would be the invention of blankets to store snow if needed. These are such a big advancement because they can in sense save the Olympics. For instance, this past Olympics in Sochi, they had days that were in the 60's. If this happens the snow is going to melt and if they have these blankets they can put down whatever melts and make it to were they can still have their events.

The second thing that has came along with technology is the advancement is hockey socks. They are creating socks to wear under gear that is cut resistant. This is very helpful to hockey players because it takes away one of the biggest risks which is getting your tendons cut in the back of your foot and ankle.

I think that these advancements have really changed in the Olympics and they will continue to change. I think that the only way that technology can go is up and that is what it will continue to do.

One of the technologies used at Olympic Games in Sochi is the fastest speedskating suit. This suit is made for the winter Olympics to help skaters travel farther. Kevin Haley, the senior vice president of innovation for Under Armour, which has sponsored the U.S. team since 2011, said he was confident the suits were fast, but, in the absence of medal-winning performances, "we'll move heaven and earth to make them better." These suits have vents on the back of it designed to let heat out and fresh air in, which creates a drag that keeps skaters in low position.
